New Zealand households are still looking for ways to ease pressure on weekly budgets, and insurance premiums are an obvious place many people look first.
Recent financial services commentary has again highlighted a familiar pattern: when living costs rise, some customers reduce benefits, extend waiting periods, remove optional cover or cancel policies altogether.
For Income Protection Insurance, those decisions can have consequences that are not always visible until illness or injury interrupts work.

The issue is not that every policy should remain unchanged forever. In fact, income protection should be reviewed when income, debt, family responsibilities or employment status changes. The concern is that affordability decisions made quickly can leave a household exposed to the exact risk the policy was designed to manage: a sudden loss of pay when regular bills continue.

For salaried employees, the first step is to understand what support already exists. Sick leave, employer benefits and ACC may help in some situations, but they do not necessarily replace income for every health condition or for the full period someone is unable to work. For self-employed people, contractors and small business owners, the gap can be even sharper because there may be no paid sick leave and income evidence can be more complex.

If premiums are becoming difficult to manage, it is usually better to review the structure before cancelling outright. That may include reassessing the insured monthly benefit, checking whether the waiting period still suits your emergency savings, and understanding how long benefits could continue. It is also important to compare waiting periods, benefit periods and exclusions, because a cheaper option may change more than just the monthly cost.

A practical review should focus on three questions:

  • How long could essential expenses be paid without earned income?
  • What monthly amount would genuinely be needed to keep the household stable?
  • Which policy features are essential, and which are negotiable if affordability is the priority?

Using a calculator to estimate the monthly benefit can help turn a vague affordability concern into a clearer planning discussion. The estimate is not a quote or approval, but it can show whether current cover is broadly aligned with income and expenses.

The broader message for New Zealand workers is reassuring but important: pressure on premiums does not automatically mean protection is unaffordable. It means the policy needs to be looked at carefully. A considered adjustment may preserve valuable income replacement cover, while a rushed cancellation can turn a short-term saving into a long-term financial risk.
