In a significant development for policyholders, leading Australian life insurer TAL has announced the expansion of its Health Sense Plus program to encompass income protection (IP) policies.
Effective from 8 August 2025, this initiative aims to incentivise proactive health management by offering premium discounts to clients who engage in preventative health checks.

The Health Sense Plus program, initially focused on life insurance products, rewards customers who undergo routine health screenings, such as general practitioner check-ups or national screening tests. By extending this benefit to income protection policies, TAL underscores its commitment to promoting overall well-being and aligning insurance offerings with customers' health-conscious behaviours.

Under the expanded program, eligible new income protection policies submitted through TAL's adviser platform will automatically receive a 5% discount on premiums for the first two years. This discount is contingent upon the policyholder's participation in specified health screenings, reinforcing the link between preventative care and financial incentives.

Aaron Newman, General Manager of Individual Life Product at TAL, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion: "By integrating income protection into our Health Sense Plus program, we're reinforcing our commitment to embedding well-being into product design and providing advisers with additional tools to support customer retention and product value."

The process for obtaining the discount is streamlined, requiring minimal additional workload for advisers and clients. Policyholders need only confirm that a routine health check has taken place; no extensive paperwork or test results are necessary. This simplicity aims to reduce barriers to preventative care and encourage more Australians to prioritise their health.

Dr Priya Chagan, General Manager of Health Services at TAL, emphasised the benefits of preventative screening: "Preventative screening is one of the simplest, most effective ways to detect or even prevent conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. By embedding preventative health into TAL's insurance offerings, we're building enduring relationships with our customers and helping them understand the value of their insurance while encouraging proactive steps to protect their health."

This enhancement is part of TAL's broader Health for Life program, which focuses on helping Australians live better, longer, and healthier lives by encouraging proactive engagement with their health. By offering financial incentives for health-conscious behaviours, TAL aims to support long-term engagement and improved health outcomes among its policyholders.
