What Rising Insurance Complaints Mean for Freelancers

Better records and clearer cover can reduce stress when a claim is disputed

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Australia’s financial complaints landscape is sending a clear message to insurance customers: the moment to understand a policy is before something goes wrong.
Recent Australian Financial Complaints Authority data shows complaint volumes remain historically high across financial services, with insurance disputes continuing to form a significant part of the workload.

For freelancers, contractors and sole traders, this matters because a delayed, declined or disputed claim can put both personal income and business continuity under pressure. Unlike employees with paid leave or employer-managed support, many self-employed professionals rely on their own cover arrangements when illness, injury, client conflict, property damage or liability allegations interrupt work.

The complaints trend does not mean every claim will become difficult. It does, however, highlight common pressure points: unclear expectations, poor documentation, misunderstandings about exclusions, and frustration when claim timeframes stretch. Freelancers often operate with lean cash reserves, so even a short delay can affect rent, software subscriptions, subcontractor payments or tax obligations.

The practical lesson is to treat insurance as part of business administration, not a once-a-year renewal chore. Policyholders should keep copies of contracts, invoices, scopes of work, client communications, medical certificates, receipts and evidence of lost income. These records can be vital if an insurer asks for proof or if a complaint later needs to be escalated.

It is also worth checking whether your cover matches the way you actually earn. A freelance designer working from home, a consultant giving strategic advice, a videographer visiting client sites and an IT contractor handling sensitive data can face very different risks. Professional indemnity, public liability, cyber, business equipment and income protection policies all answer different questions, so gaps can appear when work changes faster than cover.

Freelancers reviewing their protection should focus on:

  • What events are covered and what exclusions apply.
  • Whether policy limits reflect current client contracts and project values.
  • How income is defined if earnings fluctuate from month to month.
  • What evidence is needed to support a claim.
  • How long a claim may take and what emergency savings are available.

Using tools to estimate cover levels can help turn vague risk concerns into more concrete planning. If the wording feels complex, seeking professional assistance may also help clarify limits, exclusions and suitable policy structures.

The broader complaints data is a reminder that insurance works best when expectations are aligned early. For freelancers, that means reviewing cover before signing bigger contracts, changing services or relying on a policy as the only financial safety net.
