Claims pressure is easing in some areas, but cover reviews still matter

Australia’s life insurance sector appears to be moving into a steadier phase, with the latest prudential data pointing to improved resilience across parts of the market.
For consumers and business owners, that is a welcome signal after several years of pressure from rising claims costs, premium concerns and questions about the long-term sustainability of some products.

The improvement does not mean every issue has been resolved. Total and Permanent Disability cover and disability income insurance remain areas to watch, particularly where mental health, long-term illness and changing work patterns affect claims experience. Insurers are continuing to balance affordability for policyholders with the need to price risk accurately and keep products viable over time.

For business partnerships, the broader message is practical rather than abstract. A more stable insurance market may support better product availability and more predictable underwriting, but it does not remove the need to review whether existing policies still match the business structure, debt levels and partner responsibilities. A policy arranged several years ago may not reflect current revenue, business value, buy-sell arrangements or personal obligations.

This is especially important where life, trauma and TPD cover are being used to protect a partnership. If one partner dies, becomes seriously ill or is permanently unable to work, insurance proceeds may be expected to fund a buyout, reduce debt, support business continuity and protect the affected family. If the cover amount is outdated, the shortfall can become a negotiation problem at the worst possible time.

One useful step is to estimate appropriate sums insured using current assumptions rather than relying on old figures. Business value, liabilities, partner ownership shares and disruption periods can all change materially as a partnership grows. Even a modest increase in debt or a shift in key-person responsibilities can alter the amount of cover that may be needed.

Premium affordability also deserves careful attention. While some market indicators are improving, individual premiums can still change because of age, occupation, health disclosures, policy options and insurer pricing updates. Rather than cancelling cover in response to cost pressure, partners may be better served by reviewing benefit levels, waiting periods, ownership structures and alternative policy configurations.

The latest market update is therefore a reminder to stay calm but engaged. Stability in the sector is positive, yet insurance remains highly personal. Business partners should read policy documents carefully, keep buy-sell agreements aligned with cover, and consider professional advice before making changes that could affect claims outcomes or business continuity.

Fresh industry data has again put the spotlight on the financial health of Australia's life insurance sector, with the latest APRA reporting indicating that insurers remain in a more stable position than during the most difficult years of claims volatility and pandemic disruption. For households, however, the important message is not simply whether insurers are profitable. It is whether the cover sitting behind a mortgage, young family, business loan or superannuation account is still suitable, affordable and clearly understood. - read more
