Australia’s financial advice reform debate has moved back into the spotlight, with life insurers and advice groups continuing to argue that many people need simpler, more affordable help to understand the insurance they already hold.
For income insurance customers, the issue is practical: cover can look straightforward on a statement, but the detail often sits in definitions, waiting periods, offsets, exclusions and claim conditions.

The latest discussion centres on reforms designed to make limited, targeted advice easier to provide while keeping consumer protections in place. If implemented well, these changes could help more Australians ask focused questions about whether their cover still fits their income, occupation, family responsibilities and savings buffer. That matters because income protection needs can change quickly after a promotion, a move into contracting, a mortgage increase, reduced sick leave, business growth or a health event.

One of the biggest pressure points is insurance held through superannuation. Many members receive default or automatic cover and may not actively choose the benefit amount, waiting period or occupation category. For some people, this can provide a useful baseline. For others, it may leave a mismatch between household expenses and the benefit available if illness or injury prevents work. Understanding income protection insurance inside super is especially important because the trustee, insurer and release rules can all affect how a claim is assessed and paid.

Advice reform will not remove the need to read policy documents or compare product features carefully. It also will not make every person eligible for cover, particularly where there are pre-existing conditions, hazardous duties or irregular income patterns. However, better access to guidance could reduce the number of people who discover gaps only when they need to claim.

For employees, the key questions remain whether employer sick leave, workers compensation and any super-based salary continuance are enough to cover essential costs. For sole traders, contractors and freelancers, the questions can be more complex because income evidence, business expenses and time away from work may be harder to document. The message for consumers is not to wait for reform before reviewing cover. Check your current benefit amount, waiting period, benefit period and exclusions now. If your income or work structure has changed, your cover may need attention long before new advice rules arrive.
