Recent industry monitoring has again highlighted familiar issues for life insurers, including claim delays, communication gaps, repeated evidence requests and the need for more consistent support where customers are vulnerable or dealing with complex medical events.

For business owners, directors and partners, this is not simply a consumer protection story. A life, TPD, trauma or income-related claim may be tied to debt repayment, buy-sell funding, key person replacement costs, director guarantees or the financial security of a family that depends on the business. If a claim stalls, the consequences can extend beyond the insured person to lenders, co-owners, employees and customers.

The development extends earlier warnings about disability-related disputes. While insurer capital strength and premium sustainability remain important, the real test for an SME is often practical: who lodges the claim, what evidence is needed, who communicates with the insurer, and whether the policy purpose is clear enough to avoid confusion when decisions must be made quickly.

There are several lessons for SMEs reviewing their protection arrangements. Policy ownership should match the intended purpose of the cover. Definitions for TPD, trauma and disability benefits should be understood before a claim occurs. Waiting periods, exclusions, offsets and medical evidence requirements should be checked against the realities of the person insured and the role they perform. Where cover is intended to fund a buyout, repay debt or stabilise cash flow, the business should also have supporting documents that explain how proceeds will be used.

Sums insured also deserve close attention. A policy written several years ago may no longer reflect current revenue, staffing costs, outstanding loans, business valuation or the time needed to replace a critical person. The aim is to estimate the amount of cover required, not simply renew an old benefit amount because it is familiar or affordable.

Business life insurance should be treated as part of continuity planning rather than a stand-alone purchase. That means aligning insurance with shareholder agreements, loan facilities, succession intentions, tax advice and claims administration. Licensed advisers, accountants and legal professionals can each play a role in making sure the structure is workable. The latest scrutiny reinforces a simple point: SMEs should not wait until a claim to discover whether their cover, documentation and decision-making process are fit for purpose.
